*** A Terrible Experience with Mailchimp – Unfair Billing Practices ***
My experience with Mailchimp has been highly disappointing, and I cannot in good conscience recommend their service.
I initially chose Mailchimp as a backup system for my emails, using the Essentials plan at $11.00 per month. However, at some point, they shifted to a business model that, in my opinion, is unfair. Their two-tier billing system charges inflated prices for a Contact Block with 250 contacts, even though they could simply switch customers to an Adjusted Plan—which costs half the price.
Billing Issues & Lack of Customer Support
On January 26, 2024, we contacted Mailchimp to pause our billing after our system was spammed with thousands of fake sign-ups, which inflated not only our Mailchimp charges but also affected other integrated systems.
Our message was clear:
"We have a problem with our list, which has grown beyond expectations due to spam. Can you set our billing on hold while we try to find a solution? As you can see, we are not sending out any campaigns from our account."
Despite this explicit request, Mailchimp continued billing us every month, totaling $3,990.25.
When I followed up again on January 26, 2025, their response was a generic, unhelpful email:
"Hey there,
Thanks for being patient with your Mailchimp support request. We apologize for our slower response times as we are experiencing extremely high volume. If the above information does not help, please ensure you are writing from the account's owner/admin email address and reply to this email. We will prioritize your reply and reach out as soon as we can. We appreciate your patience!"
Meanwhile, they continue charging my card $516.75 per month.
Unfair Practices & Difficult Cancellation Process
To make matters worse, Mailchimp has made it unnecessarily difficult to disconnect from Shopify. When attempting to remove the integration, they display an alarming message:
"Are you sure you want to disconnect? Disconnecting your Mailchimp account will cause any Shopify data that's been synced to be deleted from Mailchimp. That can't be undone!"
Final Verdict: Think Twice Before Using Mailchimp
Mailchimp's billing practices and lack of customer support make them an unreliable and frustrating choice for email marketing. If you're considering Mailchimp for Shopify or any other platform, I strongly advise you to think twice before committing.
Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. We apologize for the experience you've had thus far. Our team / one of our Support managers have reached out to you directly and are actively working to resolve the billing issues.

I love the integration, it makes emailing easier and less time consuming. I love the product recommendations, however I did have issues with it pulling archived and drafted products once or twice. When I reached out to MailChimp they were helpful and seemed to very much want to fix these issues. Although a few things need to be fixed here and there, this emailer is the best one I have used so far. I love the analytics and overall ability to improve every email.
We’ve been using the Mailchimp app for our Shopify store, and it’s been working perfectly. It’s user-friendly, and the integration runs smoothly.
What truly sets this app apart is the outstanding customer support. I want to specifically highlight Lori, who went above and beyond to help us resolve a technical issue. She was quick, professional, and genuinely dedicated to finding a solution. Her expertise and willingness to assist made all the difference.
Highly recommend this app if you’re looking for a reliable email marketing solution backed by a stellar support team!
We've been using Mailchimp for 5 years. The platform is incredibly user-friendly and has been a reliable tool for our business.
This week, we encountered an issue and reached out to support. Rafael was amazing—he resolved the problem within minutes!
Dean has been very helpful the last hour. Dean gets 5 stars
The support this morning prior to Dean was really terrible and a waste of my time as well as your employees. I finally got so frustrated and fed up that I closed my account.I was told on 12/6/24 by the onboarding person that all the info would be synced and uploaded ot mailchimp. It was not as of Dec 9 . No one could figure out how to upload all my products and the pictures. I need to create email marketing pieces that were supposed to have gone out yesterday Dec 9.
I thought for sure i would be able to get the emails out today by 8 am est. WRONG WRONG WRONG
Well see if this all works later this afternoon now that i habe lost another entire day of marketing to ship to the east coast which means customers will have to pay more for shipping.
This is not to be released to the public it is only for inhouse use by mailchimp
Thank you for the details here especially your experience with Dean. Can you update your review with the ticket number of your interaction so we can take a closer look? We can also connect you directly with a member of our team with more Shopify knowledge to help you utilize the integration to the best possible. Email mc-shopifysupport@intuit.com and our team will follow up further.
Mailchimp has really gone down hill since they were acquired by Intuit. This app is terrible because it is now spamming my new customers with double-opt-in emails - some customers get those emails every day for a week straight, even though double-opt-in should be deactivated. The app is broken, it HAS BEEN broken for like 2 months, and they still haven't bothered to fix it. This makes me very upset. And I pay a lot for their services. I no longer feel it is worth it.

Mailchimp has been a good service integrating with Shopify. As with any saas integration across two platforms there are always going to have a few issues. But both sides are always quick to rectify.
I particularly would like to point out the customer success managers from mailchimp. We've had two stellar ones so far who are high on communication and helping us use all the tools available.
Thank you for your feedback! We're glad to hear about your experience with our Customer Success team.
They have many bugs in the last months and the biggest one is when our store was disconnected from they’re servers and we need to wait for more than 48 hours to finish the resync.
We apologize for the experience you've had so far. If you haven't worked with our Support team, please email mc-shopifysupport@intuit.com. Our team will follow up and look into this further with you.
Integration stopped working in around mid October. Most of the subscribers result as non-subscribers even if they opted-in.
Hey there! We're sorry about the recent experience you've had. Email mc-shopifysupport@intuit.com and our team will look into which setting may be changing subscriber status.
I found over recent years the integration with Shopify has improved, but its still far from the level other mail solutions are at. The final straw for writing this review has been trying to pause / deactivate a simple pop up / sign up form. Despite doing this there is still code / script on our site and we are left with a generic sign up form which mailchimp support can not help with. We are advised to hire "an expert" to solve this ! heck we just want to turn off a pop up form and try another one ... well this final straw will be the catalyst to finding another Email solution. Update .. now they want me to update my review .. OK well how is this. After MailChimp told me over and over that this was our issue and to hire an expert to remove the code ... Turns our it was their issue and their Developers identified the problem and removed the code. Their support was unwavering is their response that this was our issue. But we would not give in. Then in the end No Apology.
Hi there! Our Support team followed up on 6/26 with a resolution. In case it was missed, we've gone ahead and resent the response. Be sure to check spam / junk folders to be sure the reply didn't land there.
