This may be the best app I have downloaded for my site. Usually our shopify store won't show results for items unless that EXACT term is searched. For instance... If an item is titled and described as "Luffa Gourd Seeds" ... you would need to either type "Luffa" or "Gourd" to find it.
If "Loofah" or "Loofa" is typed in the product wouldn't come up. After installing this app, it easily searches products with similar spelling and it even gives recommendations and live results right in the dropdown.
We are using the free version but may plan to start paying because we love it that much. Awesome app guys!
I was also pleasantly surprised that you can add filters even! This was a game changer as well since I thought I'd have to install a whole other plugin, but this one seamlessly throws in filters by using tags and categories etc. It's really amazing and well thought out.
OVERALL...
PROS: Filters, Live Dropdown Recommendations such as pages, products, categories etc as the user types. Quick to setup, Super fast on the storefront end, Very customizable, FREE!!!!
CONS: None that I can see, literally....
Honestly, we're a bit surprised that Shopify doesn't automatically integrate great search options into their framework to begin with. Hopefully they'll consider buying this app for permanent licensing within standard themes - because it's that good!
We couldn't believe how easy it was to get started. One click to install it and all the default features were already just exactly as we wanted them.
The main issue with our site is that our standard shopify search functionality could not search our "Pages" and "Blog Posts." Only our products would come up in searches. That is a major issue for our DIY Hardwood Flooring store, because much of our brand is about supporting DIYers and getting them the information they need to complete their hardwood floor projects. Our site is a wealth of information....that NO ONE COULD SEARCH!
For example, if you typed "repair" into our search bar, not a single thing would appear. Even though we have several great articles that discuss hardwood floor repair and would have likely been very interesting to that searcher.
With Searchandise, our entire site was indexed in just seconds, and now, queries search the entire site and our articles come up front and centre. We tried out some other search apps too, but this was the best and the easiest by far!
We bought the lowest tier plan because that's all we need right now.
Here are the highlights for us:
- Searches inside blog posts and pages, as well as product pages
- Super easy setup and indexing
- Love the dropdown suggestions as you type! plus autocorrect suggestions
- Great layout on the search results pages. easy to navigate and drill down

App is really useful in providing a better search experience for my customers. From the analytics, I'm able to see what my customers are searching for (and not getting results), as well as what they are searching for using the wrong spelling and how Smart Search helps to suggest relevant results. This wasn't possible without the app.
Besides the awesome functionality, I have to say that the customer support is amazing. I asked them to try and make the default search page look more like my theme's collection page, and they were instantly on it, making numerous changes to perfect the look and feel through CSS customisations. The team didn't get it right the first time (or the second time), but there was no hesitation in working on the feedback I gave them. To me, that's going above and beyond what anyone would expect, and so kudos to the team.
I'd definitely recommend Smart Search and Instant Search to other shop owners.
Review update: I'd still recommend the app for the search function. However, getting the developers to help fix the look and feel of the search page has been incredibly frustrating. Sure, they have been willing to help, but they have not been able to fix the issues despite repeated explanations. My search page only looks 'satisfactory' on a full-screen browser, and once I resize the browser, the responsiveness doesn't work and images start to overlap the text, labels are out of place and spacing is inconsistent. Unfortunately, the customer service doesn't seem to acknowledge or understand the issue and the problems persist after months of trying.
If you have your own CSS capabilities, by all means this is a good app. If you need to rely on their developers to perfect the look and feel, my experience is that it's going to be a challenge.
I personally think this is a must-have to make a site easier to navigate and look professional. Are you serious about your store? You need this app.
This app has some good search features, but there are a few bugs in the system and the customer support is terrible!!! I followed their supplied instructions and spent days assigning colour families, but they don't show as colour swatches on the shop front. I have written to them 3 times to ask for help but have had no reply, but someone has reset all the families previously assigned. soooo frustrating and a massive waste of time.
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to see you had such a frustrating experience with our app!
As I see, one of our articles about colour families was indeed confusing so it's no surprise you had issues with this feature of ours. We apologize for that! Good to see that in the end you received correct instructions.
By the way, our team added the needed details to the article so it doesn't confuse our clients anymore. Thank you very much for drawing our attention to it!
All the best,
Searchanise team
There are so many options in this app but without enough documentation you end up spending days upon days trying to figure it all out. I want the search results to display best selling but it continues to default to featured no matter how many times i set it. The other thing is the grid continues to remain at two columns regardless of what I change. I'm now trying to remove the app but the search results disappear whenever I attempt to remove it. Beware of this app unless you have a lot of time for trial and error.
Hello,
Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to see you disappointed in our app!
I should say we indeed had some problems with our documentation previously, yet we updated it so our clients can find the needed information. You can check it out yourself or reach out to us.
We also see that the column issue was raised by you via email and we tried to help, yet we received no response from you. If you still experience such issues, we will be more than happy to assist. Just let us know!
Best wishes,
Searchanise team
Before getting this app, we noticed (in the Shopify admin panel), that too many customers were not finding what they were looking for, usually do to typos. Since getting this app, the only time a customer can't find what they are looking for is because we don't carry the item they are searching.
The search function reminds me a little of Google search. Customers type what they are looking for and if they make a mistake typing, the app will give them suggestions. (EX: customer looking for "Seed Beads" but types "Sead Beeds", the app will ask: "Did you mean Seed Beads?"). Also that app will show a drop down view of what your customer is searching for along with if the item is in stock or sold out.
I'll be the first to admit that this app is EXPENSIVE... BUT.... what are your sales and customers satisfaction worth to you? Definitely a must have app.
Try it for yourself. Visit our site: www.ibeadcanada.com and type "SEAD BEED" in the search, (or whatever you feel like).
Ok, now we are talking guys. One thing you need to know (and it is maybe the reason you are here), is that Shopify got some limitations on the search engine feature (and/or some themes). So if you want your clients to find your products not just by their titles or types, you need and app like that one.
With Searchanise, you can basically add keywords in your tags and the app will even learn from the behaviour and mistakes of your clients and will start to build its own database of keywords (but no worries, it won't mess up your tags)
The reasons I picked that one (after many other trials) :
- Easy integration on the website in two click. Works perfectly on desktop but most of all on mobile (80% of your traffic). It doesn't mess up your theme so no risk to try it.
- It is not slow and the search results page is fully configurable. You can also decided of the style of the instant search design. I like it with 6 products on desktop. Not joking, clients can browse my website's products and categories just by using the instant search feature if they want.
- You got a back up widget that you can display if your store doesn't not have a search engine, or if you just do not want it. Good to have
- Think ahead if you have to translate your website in a near future. I mean, I haven't see another search app that can be translated in more than one language (if they can!). Here, you can connect to Langify and so make it in any languages. So think about it if you need to offer your website in more than one language. BTW, Langify is the best app you can find for translation. V2 rocks !
- you have many other integrations such as Wishlist (=it will search your clients' Wishlist too), etc. For my next website I will prioritise the ones that connect to offer a fully integrated experience.
- You have plenty of other options such as synonims, black list etc. I am not using them (yet) but I assume it can be great for some websites. But the one I will start to configure this week is the one to showcase the product within the search tool.
- I didn't realise it was compatible with Kit. I cannot use it for that website as my client is French (and Kit not keen to speak French yet), but I will use it for my other aussie client. If you have a small website (small catalogue) and no time, give a try to Kit, because once it is connected to an app like searchanise, this little PA will do the full maintenance of your website.
Anyway, there is only few apps on the app store that are so well connected to others. Trust me, there is nothing more frustrating than installing your new search bar app, spend time to configure it and then 2 weeks later discover you have to switch to another because your new Wishlist app cannot communicate (ie) lol.
Ah. The support. I needed them to adjust the design of the results page. Super fast, super polite and efficient. I didn't start with that point because let's be honest, I am not installing app to test the support lol and I think it is better to tell why I picked this app rather than than how they help me because I do not have the knowledge ;) I want and app that can be configured by myself at 100% and just ask support for the fine tuning. When you can achieve that, it means you have a very good app in your hands.
And it is the case here guys.
I'll get right to the bottom line, this app made our customer experience better but most importantly, increased conversions by 25 %. GREAT APP
Awesome AWESOME AWESOME!!!! The search function is extremely fast and we have 16,000+ items. Support answered my questions about the program quickly, installation was a breeze.
